In order to curb suicides teach youngsters to deal with failure | ||

| Four students, whose numbers did not appear in the recently declared HSC marksheet booklet, attempted suicide this week. While one fortunately survived, the other three died. I'm shocked that they had to resort to this extreme step. Let's face it, today's teeny-boppers are no innocent teenagers. They are far more intelligent and well-informed at their age than our generation was.
Generation Y is the biggest beneficiary of liberalisation and globalisation. They grew up watching the latest American soap operas and talk shows. They flaunted the best sports gear and gorged on McDonald's burgers and Kentucky Fried Chicken 'buckets'. They have access to the latest news and information at their, fingertips since most possess Blackberry Storm! They have enterprising businessmen as role models, because post-1991, as the late Chinese premier Deng Xiaoping said, 'It's glorious to get rich', contrast that with the way, we grew up in the sixties and seventies. Our world was restricted to family, colony and school. The state-owned television network dished out some utter balderdash, which we mistook as entertainment. In our salad days, (to be very precise—in 1991) we had to wait for 14 years to get a telephone connection! But we grew up learning deprivation, shortages and strife, this made us tough and ready to face the vagaries of the real world. In the guise of make everything easy for Gen Y, education planners have literally paved the path to hell with good intentions! The Right to Education Act says no school shall subject any child to any screening procedure before giving them admission. The reservation expressed by experts, who feel that the tests are performance- Someone found the unit tests taxing, so mandarins suggested that schools could dilute it by holding quizzes and other project work in lieu of the same. Later the education department decreed promoting all students to a higher class, irrespective of whether they passed the exams or not. Officials will announce a new notification on how these 'promotees' will be trained in the higher classes. This year, to reduce competition and stress among students, in a revolutionary move, the education department disbanded the practice of naming student toppers for class X and XII results, as has been the convention. Achievers, who burnt the midnight oil, are expected to live in the shadows, like hermits, and then fade away. Thank God for small mercies, we have Shahrukh Khan on the silver screen and Sachin Tendulkar in the sports arena, as youth icons. In fact till a few years ago, the West was afflicted with a high suicide rate. However we drew pride in teaching lessons of determination and perseverance to pupils. Despite the flaws in our education system, we were proud that our boys and girls were able to breeze through Ivy League B-schools. Then the proudest boast was that there were more Murthys than Murphys in Silicon Valley! We can still make amends, provided we teach Gen Y to deal with failure. raghu@dnaindia. |
