Asian Development Bank ranks A'bad Janmarg as best innovation in urban public transport
Yet another accolade for BRTS

The Ahmedabad Janmarg Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), after receiving national and international awards recently, has added one more accolade to its kitty. This time it is the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that has stamped the city's BRTS as one of the best innovations in urban public transport. In a report recently published on its website, it says, "This is a crucial period for India which only recently started focusing on well-designed and financially sustainable BRT systems, so that a good replicable public transport system model can be established for its many growing cities, to address their traffic congestion and safety problems. After a few lessthan-satisfactory early attempts including those in Delhi and Pune, one BRT (brand name 'Janmarg') emerged in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, that could live up to the expectations of those who know the well-functioning public transport system," says a write-up on ADB's website, titled UrbanInnovations and Best Practices under the theme of Mobility of People by Bus Rapid Transit. Hailing the BRTS' design and implementation of public-friendly technology such as level boarding, the write-up narrates each and every aspect of the Janmarg BRTS. "One of the positives of the BRT is the use of customconfigured buses with dual side access. These buses can go out of the BRT corridor to reach various places with high passenger demand even before the full development of the corridor network," it says. The ADB has also mentioned private contacts given out on a gross cost-per-kilometre base for a period of seven years that includes 'penalties and incentives to encourage proper fleet maintenance, create a clean travelling environment for passengers and avoid vehicle breakdowns', it says. BRTS in A'bad has set an example for the rest of the country, says Shivanand Swamy Chief planner of the Janmarg BRTS, Shivanand Swamy, said that the Janmarg BRT has set an example for the rest of the country on how an efficient urban transport system beneficial to the citizens can be run.
