This happens only in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). A namesake of prime minister Manmohan Singh posed as his advisor, kept the administration on toes and enjoyed official protocol for a full two days before his luck ran out. Manmohan Singh of Hari Nagar, New Delhi, had arrived in Katra on Monday to pay obeisance at the shrine of Vaishnodevi. Before his arrival, the J&K Police received a call from the police control room of neighbouring Punjab about Manmohan Singh's visit. The entire administration was alerted and when Singh reached Katra, he was given an ambassador car and a double escort vehicle with guards. He also got a battery-driven car to cover the six-kilometre track from the base camp to the cave shrine. Apart from this, he was also provided two guides. The police got suspicious only on Tuesday, when Singh started arguing with the shrine board over the bill. "He was not ready to pay the bill. Singh kept saying he need not pay as he is advisor to the prime minister. That's when the shrine board phoned us. We quickly verified his antecedents and he turned out to be an imposter," Shiv Kumar Sharma, the police superintendent of Katra, said. Police are also investigating about the call made from the police control room of the neighbouring state. "He [Singh] has fraudulently obtained security protocol by impersonating as the prime minister's advisor. His secretary managed to dupe the police in Punjab as well. They called us up so that he gets state protocol," another police officer said. The trip reportedly cost the exchequer lakhs of rupees. "We are still working out the exact costs incurred on providing him official protocol," a source in the government said. An embarrassed J&K police tried to save face by saying they followed the rule book because Punjab had made the call on giving his security. "Singh has been arrested and case has been registered against him for fraud. We're conducting an inquiry," said a police spokesman at Jammu. |
