| 10 Great Makeup and Creations  01. John Caglione, Jr.  | John Caglione Jr. began his career doing makeup on Saturday Night Live in the late-'70s/early-'80s. While he became known for providing makeup for the brightest comics in the biz, it wasn't until he provided makeup for comic adaptations that the Academy Awards came knocking on his door. In 1990, John Caglione Jr. won (along with Doug Drexler) for Best Makeup for his work on the visually stunning Dick Tracy. But that was just the tip of the Oscar iceberg. Greg Cannom  | Makeup artist Greg Cannom's range and versatility is unparalleled in show business. Not only did Greg Cannom work as a makeup artist on Michael Jackon's "Thriller" music video, he also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup for Mrs. Doubtfireas well as for Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and, most recently, David Fincher's F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Jack Pierce  | The look of some of the best-known monsters in all of cinema can be accredited to the legendary Jack Pierce. In 1931, Jack Pierce worked as a makeup artist for the pivotal horror film, Dracula (starring the late, great Bela Lugosi). After that, the ever-prolific Pierce went on to create the makeup designs for classic Universal Pictures films such as Frankenstein and The Wolfman. In 2003, Jack Pierce was posthumously given the Lifetime Achievement Award by Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild. |  05. William Tuttle.  | In 1939, William Tuttle was a makeup artist for one of the greatest, most beloved films of all time: The Wizard of Oz. If he ended his career right then and there, William Tuttle would still be remembered today. Instead, the makeup master went on to work on classic films such as North by Northwest and Singin' in the Rain. But William Tuttle isn't just a geniushe's a pioneer, too. During the 1965 Academy Awards, William Tuttle was given an Honorary Award for outstanding makeup achievement for 7 Faces of Dr. Laoalmost two decades before Best Makeup became an official Oscar category. |  06. Rick Baker  | With monster-movie credentials like An American Werewolf in London and The Wolfman (2010), one could say that Rick Baker is the successor to the great Jack Pierce. Rick Baker is responsible for Michael Jackson's werewolf makeup in the "Thriller" videoone of the most iconic creatures in pop-culture historyand the incredible makeup effects in Ron Howard's whimsical piece of eye candy, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Rick Baker also holds the record for most Academy Award nominations (10) and wins (7) in the Best Makeup Category. |  07. Mandy Hall.  | Mandy Hall is quickly becoming one of the best, most sought after makeup artists in the business. Although she's been working in film since the late '80s/early '90s, Hall made a giant footprint in the industry after winning the Academy Award for Best Makeup for her work on J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot. It takes great talent to make sure a well-known character like Spock looks simultaneously authentic and fresha talent which Hall possesses in full. Here's hoping J.J. Abrams uses Hall on future projects. |  08. Chris Walas.  | When it comes to body horror makeup effects, there's no one better than Chris Walas. Wallas was on makeup duty for the disgustingly wonderful The Flya gig that earned him an Academy Award for Best Makeup. Wallas was also the artist who provided the makeup for the face-melting scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. But that's not all. Chris Walas' biggest claim to fame is his much-beloved '80s creations: The Gremlins from the eponymous film. |  09. Richard Taylor.  | If you're a fan of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, then you certainly know Richard Taylor's name. Taylor is the head of the Weta Workshopa New Zealand movie prop company responsible for all the costumes, props and weaponry for Jackson's epic Tolkien adaptations. Taylor's efforts won him the Academy Award for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. |  10. Stan Winston.  | Johnny Depp may be Tim Burton's most famous partner in film, but Stan Winston is just as important to the filmmakers' gothic aesthetic and overall legacy. Winston was the makeup artist on Burton's most visually stunning films, including Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns and Big Fish. Stan Winston's Academy Award collection includes the Best Makeup and Best Visual Effects Oscar for Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
