Leonid Afremov (Vitebsk, 1955) is a Belarus born, Israeli modern painter who creates unique landscapes, cityscapes and figures using a palette knife rather than a brush to paint.
Born in Marc Chagall's birthplace, Leonid Afremov graduated from the famous Vitebsk Art School, an art school that was founded by Chagall in 1921 and includes many notable patrons such as Malevich and Kandinsky. However, after discovering that only communist propaganda posters would sell in the Soviet Union, Afremov moved to Israel in 1990.[citation needed] Within two weeks, he had found a job in an advertising agency painting billboards, but again Afremov faced problems when the orthodox Jewish Israeli's found his controversial works offensive and on the eve of an exhibition, his studio was broken in to and vandalised.[citation needed] Afremov then moved to the United States and currently resides in Boca Raton, Florida.
