I have some good news to share with all of you on the occasion of Golden Gujarat celebrations which had now begun from May 1, 2010... that the lion population in Gujarat has crossed 400 mark...
...13th Asiatic Lion census-2010 doubling to 411 from 205 in 1979. This indeed has touched my heart and I would say it is good news for the country and the world over... The reason for this spectacular growth of Asiatic lion - Pride of India - is due to special initiatives taken by the Gujarat government especially to beef up their security in Gir and Greater Gir areas (Brihad Gir) comprising grasslands of Jesar, Savarkundla, Mahuva and Palitana... Every Gujarati I am sure is justifiably proud of the lion population going up... I wish to thank all of them for their concern and best wishes. ...I would like to remind them that lions are intricately linked to our ecosystem and are part of the food chain creating a delicate ecological balance which if destroyed can inflict us untold harm for generations to come.
